a corset of void and light

This project explores the use of geometry and light to re-shape the human form through the enhancement of a corset - a traditional mode of transforming the body - with LED strips. Wearers may explore an android vision of themselves as they find digital animations overwriting their analogue bodies.

As tradition has drifted from the commonplace use of corsets, they have largely been regulated to the role of costume pieces. By enhancing one such corset, the experience becomes more transformative, as it melds the effects of technology with the mechanical effects of the corset.

The high contrast between the lights and the spaces in-between further creates the illusion of a void within the wearer’s body, erasing the mid-section and defining it as negative space to be re-defined by the wearable, while the constant movements of the lights evoke the flickering lights of a city seen from above, further enhancing the futuristic feel.

Wearers may interact by choosing between different animations, further reinforcing the link between their analogue decisions and the digital consequences in determining how the switches exert control over one’s ‘future’. In this way, wearers are able to experience a taste of the future, manifested as wearable styled with a nod towards the cyberpunk aesthetic of the 1960s and 70s.
