FLUNG OUT OF SPACE
Creating invisible connections through space
Wearable Technology 2020 final project
Flung Out of Space (FOS) is a two-part set of wearable accessories designed to increase intimacy between two people by adding an element of synchrony to their biology, without needing the touch or immediate presence of the other party. It is manifested as a distinctively styled, coordinated set of choker and bracelet, to be worn separately but at the same event. FOS plays with the visible and the invisible, the public and the private, by creating a visual connection between the two wearers as well as a secret physiological bond through a shared language of biofeedback.
The two parts of FOS combine pulse sensors with pancake motors and radio-based wireless communication to pass heartbeats between the two wearers at the press of a hidden soft button, created using conductive fabric. Handmade GSR sensors are combined with discrete LEDs to serve as mood indicators, and each piece is covered in hot pink reflective fabric and embellished with pink and blue spikes, influenced in the styling by posture collars, cuffs, punk aesthetics, and kawaii subcultures.
